So, I've really gotten into amigurumi, which is the Japanese word for crocheted (or knitted) toys. It's fun to do because you can finish most projects in a night or two, and also because it's best to use acrylic yarn, so I can use up all the old acrylic yarn I got before I became a relatively good knitter and started using the higher quality wools and wool blends.
I'm not very good, yet, but I've got a lot of old yarn to use up, so I'll keep practicing.
This is an amigurumi base, from which point you could make a lot of different things--lemur, elephant, kitten, alien, whatever.
I chose to make a hippopotomus, in honor of my mother, who was once
almost eaten by one. His name is William, in honor of the Met's
unofficial mascot, the Egyptian faience hippopotomus. He's kind
of lumpy, and I'm not sure if that's love or psychosis in his little
button eyes, but he's not too shabby for a first try.
This is a little box shaped like a mushroom, obviously. I think I
might send it to my sister for her birthday, along with a real
present. Only, I don't know what I should get her. She's
hard to buy for, so I usually just end up getting her a really cute
purse.
And here are William and the Mushroom Box, sitting peacefully side by
side. Lots and lots of yarn to use up, you know, so there will
hopefully be lots more to come.
I did both of them in Caron Simply Soft worsted, on an H/8 hook. The hippopotomus pattern came from Roxy Craft and the 'Shroom pattern came from Crochet Me, which I think is going to turn out to be a great crochet pattern resource.
